Lenovo IdeaPad U8 MID now on sale, shipping

By Jenn K. Lee

You've already seen the Lenovo IdeaPad U8 launched, unboxed, and reviewed, and now you can finally buy one for yourself (you live in China, right?).

The Atom-based MID can now be purchased from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou retail shops; ordered over the phone; and bought online at Lenovo's official flagship e-store and luobao365 for the previously announced price of 4999 yuan (~$730).

Lenovo's online store, launched last month on Taobao.com (Asia's largest network retailer and online consumer-to-consumer platform), even has a Moon Festival promotion going on until September 20th that includes six free gifts with every U8 purchase:

  1. Lenovo E210 cell phone
  2. LOMO camera
  3. 2GB SD card
  4. ThinkPad Memorial baseball cap (?)
  5. Skywalker GPS software
  6. Club membership card (?)

I don't understand some of those gifts either, but hey, free is free.

One thing to note about the U8 itself is that it only supports EDGE. Previously translated specs mentioned something about "3G network support" and "WiMAX Internet access," but the new product pages specifically cite integrated wi-fi, Bluetooth, and EDGE.

Oh well. My visitor stats indicate that you don't live in China, anyway.
